AUGIE’S (not that Augie) RYE PALE ALE

April 25, 2008

ONE OF THE FUN IDEAS organizers dreamed up for this year’s
Heritage Festival is to feature the beer of a St. Louis
homebrewer. So they decided to award the winner of a local
homebrew competition the opportunity to have his or her
recipe brewed professionally by a St. Louis brewery (that
would be us, I’m pleased to report) and served at this
year’s St. Louis Heritage Beer Festival.

The local Best of Show winner of the St. Louis Brews Happy
Holidays Homebrew Competition was Augie Altenbaumer (not to
be confused with that other Augie who runs in local beer
circles!). We were thrilled to be asked to brew a 15
barrel batch of one of Augie’s recipes, and he chose his
Rye American Pale Ale, which calls for 20% malted rye and
just one variety of hops, Simcoe.

Head Brewer Brian Owens calls it a “profoundly drinkable
beer, with a malty sweetness balanced with a citrusy
hopiness and a spicy rye finish.” Rumor has it that Augie
toned down the Simcoe knowing his girlfriend prefers her
beer moderately hopped. Whether that’s true or not, he
makes a really good beer. And you can taste it and meet
Augie tomorrow in Parkville, MO. Read on:

O’FALLON BREWERS BRIAN, DAVE AND CHARLIE are road-trippin’
it to KC tomorrow for the Parkville Microbrewery Festival,
which is one of the good ones and always draws a big crowd.
They’re taking kegs of Wheat, IPA, Smoked Porter and
Wheach AND a firkin of Augie’s (not that Augie) Rye Pale --
and Augie himself, too! Look for our booth and tell the
guys I sent you! For more information about the festival

SPEAKING OF BEER FESTIVALS, THE BEST BEER FEST IN ST. LOU
IS COMING UP! Block out some time on Friday, May 9th and
Saturday, May 10th for a fabulous beer festival that
features the many and various beers brewed in our hometown.
AND, last I heard, they are still need of volunteers.
Work one shift and you’ll receive a free ticket to the
Friday or Saturday session, a food voucher and a t-shirt.
All you need to do is show up one hour early and cheerfully
pour beer -- not a bad gig! For more information contact
Michael Grace at mgrace@lilftforlife.org or 314-436-2337.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND and enjoy a good beer -- and let’s all
try to make the world a better place one beer at a time.

Cheers!
